Jacob Ochtervelt’s canvas presents a scene of leisure, where figures engage in a game of backgammon, a symbol of strategy and social interaction during the Dutch Golden Age. The backgammon game itself becomes a stage for human drama. Much like in Caravaggio’s "The Cardsharps", there is a sense of cunning and calculation, reflecting the psychological dance between the players. The backdrop behind them is reminiscent of theatrical drapery, as if they were staging a play. Even the gesture of the player's hand as she reaches to play evokes the symbolic act of choice and fate that one also finds in depictions of classical goddesses, such as Fortuna. The dog is a classical symbol of fidelity, but perhaps here it is a commentary on domestic complacency. Such visual elements have a tendency to be reborn, shifting in meaning with each era, as the subconscious collective memory reshapes them.
