William Mulready made these Figure Studies with pen and brown ink, on paper. During Mulready’s time, the British art world was deeply entwined with notions of class and masculinity, often sidelining other narratives. Here, we see a departure from the grand historical paintings that dominated the Royal Academy. Instead, Mulready sketches everyday figures. The act of drinking, a simple pleasure, becomes a focal point, challenging the rigid social norms of the time. In this study, Mulready seems to explore various facets of human existence, from labor to leisure. The figures, caught in moments of reflection and activity, invite us to consider the diverse experiences of individuals navigating their roles within a rapidly changing society. These sketches give us an intimate glimpse into the artist's process, while also hinting at the stories of those whose lives are often overlooked in the grand narratives of history.
