Robert Doisneau snapped this monochrome photograph, Fox terrier on the Pont des Arts, with his camera. I can only imagine the scene that day; the quiet focus of the artist at work and that lovely terrier with such a sweet face. I really sympathize with the painter in this photograph; he’s capturing a moment, a feeling, a scene en plein air. I wonder what he thought when that man and his dog crossed into his view. Did he embrace the disruption or curse the intrusion? It’s not just about what is depicted, but the whole material experience that brings a photograph like this to life; the surface texture, the play of light and shadow, and how the photographer has arranged everything within the frame. Like a painter, Doisneau composed this scene as an interplay of shapes, lines, and tones. He took a risk that day on the bridge, just like all artists do, and I am thankful for it!
