Jerzy Nowosielski made this untitled print of women in red, and just imagining his process, it seems like a dance between chance and intention. The flat planes of colour create these figures that are both present and absent. It feels as though they're conjured from a dream. There’s a push and pull between abstraction and figuration. They're there, but they're not quite whole. I wonder, what was Nowosielski thinking when he made this? Was he also intrigued by the push and pull of colour and form? This bending figure has such a casual feeling. It reminds me a bit of Léger, with the way he turned figures into simple shapes. We artists, we are always in conversation, remixing the old into something new. Painting, at its best, is this constant dialogue, a space of endless possibility.
