This is Juan Gris's "Still Life with Goblet", executed with pencil, presents a study in form and shadow. The composition is built upon a network of lines, hatching, and cross-hatching, creating a sense of depth and volume. Gris uses subtle gradations of tone to define the shapes of the goblet, cylinder and cloth, giving them weight and presence. Gris was deeply influenced by Cubism. As such, the drawing reflects the movement's interest in breaking down objects into their essential geometric forms. The analytical approach invites us to consider how we perceive reality, not as a seamless whole but as a collection of fragmented perspectives. Note how the lines and shadows not only define the objects but also exist as independent marks, contributing to the overall texture and rhythm of the composition. This interplay between representation and abstraction is key to understanding Gris's artistic project and his contribution to the Cubist aesthetic. This drawing becomes a site for exploring the very nature of seeing and representing.
