Marko Pogacnik made this drawing of a bottle, using simple lines on a white background. It is an enigmatic artwork. What exactly might it mean to present this everyday object in such an unadorned way? Pogacnik is a Slovenian artist and sculptor who co-founded the art collective Group OHO in the 1960s. This was a period of political unrest and social change in Yugoslavia and elsewhere. Group OHO were interested in exploring the relationship between art and life, experimenting with new forms of expression, and challenging conventional notions of art. This might explain the bottle. Is it a comment on consumer culture? Is it a deliberately mundane subject to challenge elitist views of art? To interpret this work fully, we'd need to delve into Pogacnik's wider artistic practice and the socio-political context in which he was working. This could involve looking at archive material, critical reviews, and historical accounts of the period. Doing so may unlock further layers of meaning in this seemingly simple drawing.
