Gerhard Ludvig Lahde created this print, "Winged Genius Following a Ploughman," sometime in the late 18th or early 19th century. The print depicts a winged figure sowing seeds behind a ploughman who is guiding a horse-drawn plough. Lahde lived during a time of significant social change in Europe. The enlightenment ideas of reason and individualism challenged traditional hierarchies. While we might initially see this image as a celebration of labor, it's hard to ignore the politics of its time. Consider who is performing the labor; and who is watching. The figure sowing seeds appears to be an allegorical figure. This could be seen as an acknowledgement of the divine right of ownership. The image leaves us to consider the relationship between the earthly labor of the farmer and the more ethereal, perhaps divine, role of the winged figure. Lahde's image invites us to contemplate the labor of the field, and the seeds of societal change.
