This anonymous photograph captures the stairs to the pulpit in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam, sometime in the past. It’s all about the details, isn’t it? Look at the way the light catches on every curve and flourish of the carvings. You can almost feel the texture of the wood, even in this sepia-toned image. The steps up to the pulpit are richly carved, and you can see the care that has gone into each tiny element. It’s not about the destination, but the journey, each mark a testament to time and care. The photograph reminds me of Piranesi and his etchings of ancient Rome, with their monumental scale and obsessive detail. I love the way that both artists create a sense of wonder and awe through their work. Art is an invitation, not a declaration.
