Danil Nemirovsky made this drawing of machine parts with some ink and a lot of cross-hatching. The composition has a graphic punch, the black ink creating shadowy voids, and the white of the page defining its architectural forms. I imagine Nemirovsky bending over the page, patiently building up each of the forms with layers and layers of precisely drawn lines. The whole thing has an obsessive quality. The machine elements are like props pulled from some discarded stage set. I notice a kind of robotic leg standing at the left, and what looks like a pile of chair parts and tubes over on the right. He's obviously looking at other artists, like sci-fi illustrators and maybe even some of the surrealist artists. There is a conversation that stretches across generations. One artist sees what the other artist has done, and that somehow gives them permission to try something new. And that's how art moves forward.
