This untitled work by Dominique Appia stages a curious gathering within a metro station, populated by figures across time. Note the raised glasses, a gesture resonant with celebration and toasting, an act deeply embedded in our collective memory. This motif stretches back through Roman libations to the gods, finding its echo in countless Renaissance banquets, and even today's casual gatherings. The impulse to mark a moment with a shared drink transcends epochs. Consider, too, the theatrical garb—each costume a signifier of distinct eras. Are these simply historical references, or do they evoke something deeper? Do they not speak to our ingrained fascination with the past and its repeated resurfacing in the present, a psychological drive to reconcile who we are with what we once were? Appia presents not a linear progression, but a cyclical return, a constant reimagining of historical moments through art.
