This engraving depicts Archduke Charles of Austria as King of Spain, entering Madrid in June 1706. He stands adorned with royal vestments and is holding a scepter. To his left, a crown rests on a cushion. In the background, we see the city of Madrid, the prize of his ascension. Consider the scepter: a symbol of power and authority. It echoes through history, from the staffs of ancient priests to the batons of modern-day conductors. Here, it represents Charles's claim to the Spanish throne. We find this symbol of power repeated again and again in works of art and objects across many cultures. Think of Tutankhamun’s scepters, symbols of divine authority and supreme rule. These symbols resonate due to our collective memory, a shared understanding of their significance that transcends time. Their power engages us on a subconscious level, stirring emotions tied to themes of governance and control. Observe how this symbol reappears throughout history, evolving and adapting, yet still carrying the weight of its original meaning.
