This work by Guy Mees is composed of pink and cream fragments that seem to float like confetti across a pale green ground. I imagine him carefully applying each piece, perhaps shifting them around, guided by a playful yet considered intuition. I think of Mees in his studio, sifting through scraps, a magpie collecting shiny bits. There’s a delicacy here, a lightness of touch that belies the physical act of painting. It reminds me of Kurt Schwitters, but quieter, more restrained. The surface is matte, almost chalky, which gives the colors a soft, diffused quality. The pinks range from blush to rose, creating a subtle harmony. Each fragment is like a brushstroke, contributing to the overall composition. It makes me wonder, what were his intentions? What emotions or ideas was he trying to express? But maybe the beauty lies in its ambiguity, in the space it creates for our own interpretations. Artists are always in conversation with one another, inspiring new ways of seeing and feeling.
