Lorser Feitelson probably painted "Flight Over New York At Twilight" with oil on canvas, layering soft, fleshy tones against a dark background. I imagine him standing before the easel, brush in hand, his brow furrowed in concentration. The painting is so enigmatic and surreal, isn't it? Like a dreamscape where gravity is optional and human forms float freely. I can almost feel Feitelson's curiosity as he explores the possibilities of the human form. The way he renders the figures with such smooth, almost porcelain-like skin—it reminds me of the Old Masters, but with a distinctly modern twist. And those floating figures, are they ascending, or falling? Think of de Chirico. Think of Magritte. But Feitelson is doing his own thing. I imagine Feitelson standing back, squinting at his work, and thinking: "What is it about this twilight that makes everything feel so uncertain, so open to interpretation?"
